You might have come across terms like "phototoxicity," "photosensitivity," or "photo irritation" while looking into essential oils. What does that really mean?

Let's dive into this topic a bit deeper. It's when your skin becomes extra sensitive to sunlight or UV rays because of certain things you put on it - like certain essential oils, for instance.

The scientific term for this skin reaction is phytophotodermatitis. It means that when plants, light, and skin inflammation mix, things get a bit tricky.

What can those reactions look like?
Some examples of the irritation you can experience are:
- Inflammation
- Redness
- Itching
- Burning
- Blisters
- Skin discoloration

These phototoxic "burns" often start as a rash within 1-24 hours of sun or UV exposure, including tanning beds, and can progress rather fast.

Exposure Duration: The time spent under the sun matters significantly. Brief moments, like walking from your car to the store, likely won't trigger a reaction. However, prolonged activities such as gardening on a sunny day or spending the day at the beach could lead to photosensitivity reactions.

To be safe, stay out of the sun for prolonged periods at least 12 to sometimes even 72 hours after application to the skin.

Use the two products together to enjoy synergistic harmony for your skin!
