We are excited to talk about our beloved pets and the benefits of essential oils! Not only humans can benefit from these gifts of the earth. We will share the precautions, the best oils to use and the ones to avoid, and we will dive deeper into specific oils, blends and supplements.

You may ask yourself, which kind of pets can benefit from essential oils? The common ones are dogs and cats. But did you know that horses, birds, reptiles, amphibians, rabbits, and more can benefit from these gifts of the earth?

As a precautionary note, like humans consult their physicians, please consult your veterinarian if there are any specific health questions or concerns you may have about your pet.

Just like applying oils to your babies, we want to always dilute our oils with our pets. Based on information by Dr. Janet Roark, here is a simple dilution percentage to follow.

Cats: 0.5% - 2% (1- 4 drops per 10ml of carrier oil)

Rabbits and other small Rodents and Reptiles: 0.5% - 1%  (1-2 drops per 10ml of carrier oil)

Dogs: 0.5% for hot oils and for dogs under 20 lbs/ 9 kg, use up to 3% for gentle oils with larger dogs  (1- 6 drops per 10ml of carrier oil)

Goats or Sheep: 2% - 10% for hot oils - gentle oils may be used undiluted  (1- 20 drops per 10ml of carrier oil)

Horses: 5%-10% for hot oils with sensitive-skinned horses, otherwise undiluted  (10- 20 drops per 10ml of carrier oil)

Remember, each animal is an individual, and your pet may be more or less sensitive than others. Observe their behavior – they will tell you!

Episode 41: Ask the Vets: Essential Oils for Your Pets

Did you know animals have up to 50X more olfactory receptors? Humans have 6 million, and a dog has up to 300 million! This means our canine friends will need way less of what we do as adults.

Diffusion is one major part of using essential oils around your pets. Always leave the door open so your pet can leave the room. Additionally, you may open a window to add some fresh air for maximum benefit.

If you are on the go, simply put a drop in your hands and let your pet inhale the aroma.

Regarding our little bundles of fur, safety is paramount. Essential oils can offer gentle support for your puppies and kittens, but it's crucial to choose wisely.

Here are some safe options:

Lavender: Known for its calming properties, Lavender is a go-to for soothing your young pets during stressful moments.

Roman Chamomile: Just like it helps humans relax, Roman Chamomile can have a calming effect on your furry friends.

Cardamom: A digestive aid that's gentle enough for puppies and kittens, Cardamom can help soothe their tummies.

Frankincense: This versatile oil may support their well-being, especially during growth.

Remember, always dilute these oils properly and consult your veterinarian for guidance. Keep your little ones happy, healthy, and safe.

When using essential oils around cats, it's crucial to exercise caution. Here's a list of some essential oils from the doTERRA lineup that should generally be avoided or used very sparingly with cats:

Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Oil: Tea Tree oil is known for its potent properties but can be toxic to cats if ingested or applied undiluted on their skin. It's best to avoid using it around cats.

Birch Oil: Birch oil contains methyl salicylate, which can harm cats, especially if ingested. It's advisable to avoid this oil when you have feline companions.

Wintergreen Oil: Wintergreen oil also contains methyl salicylate and should be avoided with cats due to its potential toxicity.

Peppermint Oil: While some cats may not react badly to Peppermint oil, it can cause respiratory issues in others. It's best to use Peppermint oil cautiously and in diluted forms around cats, if at all.

Cassia Oil: Cassia oil is closely related to cinnamon and contains similar compounds that can be harsh on cats' sensitive systems. It's safer to keep this oil away from them.

Cinnamon Bark Oil: Cinnamon bark oil is potent and can cause skin irritation and digestive upset in cats. It's best used aromatically only.

Oregano Oil: Oregano oil is potent and can cause gastrointestinal upset in cats. It's safer to use this oil aromatically or topically only with appropriate dilution and ventilation.

Arborvitae Oil: This oil may cause skin irritation in cats. It's best to avoid topical application or direct contact.

Eucalyptus Oil: Eucalyptus oil can be harmful to cats if ingested or if they inhale it in large quantities. It's best used sparingly and in well-ventilated areas.

Citrus Oils: Cats simply don’t like citrus oils, but they do NOT irritate them, you can diffuse all citrus oils with generous ventilation around cats without any issues.

Remember that each cat is unique, and while some may be more sensitive to certain oils, others may not show any adverse reactions. However, it's always better to be safe and consult a veterinarian if you have any concerns about using essential oils around your feline companions.

Let’s talk about cats. They may have weird personalities, but we are here to support their fantastic temperament and health.

Here are the top six essential oils that can be used safely for cats when diluted and applied appropriately:

Lavender Oil: Lavender is known for its calming and soothing properties. It can help cats relax and ease stress. Dilute and use it aromatically or topically, but continuously monitor your cat's response.

Copaiba Oil: Copaiba supports various bodily systems in cats, including the cardiovascular and nervous systems. It can be used when diluted and applied topically.

Cardamom Oil: Cardamom is gentle and can support cats' digestive and respiratory systems. It's safe when diluted and applied topically or used aromatically.

Frankincense Oil: Frankincense has potential benefits for skin irritations in cats. Dilute it and apply it topically.

Tamer Oil: Tamer oil can promote wellness in cats, especially regarding digestive health. It should be well diluted and applied topically or diffused.

Helichrysum Oil: Helichrysum is known for its wound-healing properties and can be used topically to support cat skin health. Dilute it adequately.

Spearmint Oil: Spearmint, is one of the best respiratory oils for cats aside from cardamom, and can support digestive and respiratory health.

Always remember that cats are more sensitive to essential oils than some other animals, so proper dilution and cautious use are crucial. It's crucial to consult with a veterinarian before introducing any new essential oils to your cat's routine, especially if your cat has preexisting health conditions or is pregnant.

Additionally, choose high-quality, pure essential oils from a reputable source like doTERRA to ensure safety and effectiveness. To rule out uncertainty in your use of essential oils with your cat, the doTERRA Kids Line is an excellent choice as they are prediluted and all safe to use.
